On Saturday, Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers picked up an impressive 5-0 road win over the San Diego Padres to push their record on the 2024 MLB season to 27-14. Unfortunately, the good vibes were dimmed a bit by the fact that Ohtani was forced to leave the game after his fourth at-bat in the contest, leading some to wonder whether he would be available for Sunday afternoon's Dodgers game vs the Padres, which is set to mark the final game of the series.

On Sunday, fans got their answer, as it was announced that Ohtani would miss the contest.

“Shohei Ohtani is not in the Dodgers lineup today, as expected, after feeling back tightness last night,” reported Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter.

In the game vs the Padres on Saturday evening, Ohtani didn't have his best performance, going 0-3 with a walk and grounding out in his final at bat before being replaced by Kike Hernandez after sustaining the injury.

Manager Dave Roberts elaborated on the injury a little bit but understandably didn't go into a whole lot of detail after the game concluded.

“His back tightened up,” Roberts said, per the Associated Press (via Yahoo Sports). “So it was one of those things where I got word before his fourth at-bat his back tightened up. So, being up 5-0, we didn’t want to push it. We’ll see how he comes in tomorrow.”

Roberts had already essentially confirmed that Ohtani would miss the game Sunday, stating, that “things could change, but most likely, we'll probably give him the day (off),”.

It's been a successful stint with the Dodgers so far this year for Ohtani, who has maintained his status as one of the game's biggest stars and has cemented himself as one of the early frontrunners for the MVP award.

The Dodgers as a whole have won almost twice as much as they have lost as they look to bounce back from two straight early playoff exits and break through to win another World Series championship. Sunday's game is slated to begin at 4:10 PM ET.
