Denis Villeneuve's Dune will return to IMAX screens for a special one-night engagement.

One night only

Timothée Chalamet, Dune, Zendaya

On January 17, IMAX announced that Dune will return to IMAX for one night only on January 24. In addition to seeing the film in the format, fans who attend these screenings will get a sneak peek at the upcoming sequel.

The full list of theaters that will screen the re-release can be found on IMAX's official website.

Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film was an adaptation of the first half of Frank Herbert's dense novel, Dune. It was the second major adaptation after David Lynch's in 1984. A sequel, which will adapt the second half of the book, will be released on March 1, 2024.

Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, and Zendaya led the first film. The sequel will feature plenty of holdovers. But there will also be new stars joining the cast including Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Florence Pugh.

The second film will resume Paul Atreides' (Chalamet) rise as he seeks revenge against those that tore his family apart. He is now united with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen at the beginning of the sequel.

It's a slow month for IMAX. The Beekeeper and Mean Girls came out last week, but it's unlikely that either will hold the large format screenings for long.

Denis Villeneuve's biggest projects to date are his two Dune films. He is also known for directing other sci-fi epics like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Some of his other filmmaking credits include Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario.
