Before the NFC Championship in Philadelphia last weekend, city officials in the city decided they needed to do something a little odd, but for a good reason. They were concerned that fans might celebrate a win over the Minnesota Vikings by climbing light poles. So, to stop them, they had the light poles in downtown Philly covered with Crisco.

But, as could be expected, it didn’t work. Some made it up anyway.

Since it didn’t work after the NFC Championship, city officials have decided they aren’t going to bother doing it again leading up to Super Bowl 52.

Does this mean they are going to do nothing? Will people be free to climb the city’s light poles to their heart’s content?

Of course not. City officials have a plan, but this time, they aren’t sharing it with the rest of the world.

According to reports from the Associated Press, police commissioner Richard Ross thinks they have found something slicker that will be safe and effective. If people do try to climb a light pole after Sunday’s game, they are going to find it pretty difficult to do.

People on the outside looking in may wonder why they are bothering with the light poles at all. Win or lose, thousands of fans are probably going to take to the streets. They will want to celebrate or commiserate with their fellow fans. As long as they aren’t hurting anyone or damaging anything, what’s the big deal?

The answer is simple—it’s all about safety. But not just the safety of the person climbing the pole. The concern is also for the person he or she may land on should they fall.
