Reports have been circulating for months about Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom's alleged chaotic production, but director James Wan has come out to say that couldn't be further from the truth.

Wan spoke about the process of bringing the superhero sequel to the big screen and the alleged issues that plagued its production, from the changing DC leadership at WB to Amber Heard's public problems with ex-husband Johnny Depp. While previous reports said these all contributed to extensive reshoots, Wan told Empire Magazine reshoots only amounted to “seven or eight days” that were only spread out as much as they were due to working around peoples' schedules.

“I’ve had to learn to be more Zen in dealing with all the noise around me, for sure,” Wan told Empire. “I don’t get on social media and have fights, but it’s difficult because this narrative has emerged that is not the reality. The noise is fun to write about, and it gets clicks, but people don’t know the truth.”

Wan's statements come only days after it was alleged in notes from Heard's therapist that star Jason Momoa created a hostile environment toward his co-star following her public court battles with Depp. The notes claimed Momoa had shown up to set drunk, dressed up as Depp, and pushed to have Heard removed from the film entirely.

A representative for DC and Warner Bros. pushed back at these claims in a public statement, saying Momoa had “conducted himself in a professional manner” on set.

As for Aquaman's larger future on the big screen, it appears that may be up in the air for the time being following the last leadership shuffle that put James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge of rebooting and guiding a new DC cinematic universe. Several actors' futures, such as Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, are still up in the air while Momoa is reportedly in talks to play the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo going forward.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to release in theaters on December 20, 2023.
