Daniel Brühl said he's confident that his Baron Zemo will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Screen Rant reported.
He first appeared in 2016's Captain America: Civil War to break up the Avengers. Brühl's character quickly became a fan-favorite and led him to reprise the role in the Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. At this time, Zemo has not been confirmed to appear on any upcoming MCU project. However, it seems that his return is more a matter of when and not if.
Brühl spoke to Screen Rant during an interview for his upcoming biopic Becoming Karl Lagerfeld. He said that he remembers Zemo as being alive so he should be able to return. The earliest project would be Thunderbolts, but there has been no announcement of his character's return.
Could Baron Zemo return?
“It's fine for me, I can wait. I'm a very patient man,” the actor began.
“No, I'm not, but it's funny, because in the meantime, I just wrapped on a show that's called The Franchise, where it's actually a satire about the superhero universe, so it was fun to switch sides, so to say. But knowing Marvel, they have a lot of sense of humor, so they will probably find it as funny as I did. And who knows, I mean, I'm still not dead, I'm very confident that I'll be back,” he said.
However, Zemo's no-show in Thunderbolts is a bit surprising. In the upcoming superhero movie, lesser known characters such as Ghost and Taskmaster are present. The film could definitely benefit from the morally gray baron's presence. Even more confusing is that Zemo is closely linked to the Thunderbolts — he's actually the team leader.
Since Thunderbolt hasn't announced its full cast yet, there's a chance Zemo could show up or at least make a cameo to set up a sequel. Marvel movies are famous for that. Remember when Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury showed up in 2008's Iron Man?
If not in Thunderbolts, he could show up in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. With Anthony Mackie reprising his role as Sam Wilson (AKA the new Captain America), Brühl could do the same for Zemo, especially since Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes isn't in the movie. Sam will need reinforcements against the villains Leader, Diamondback and whoever Giancarlo Esposito's character is going to be.
The last time we saw Zemo, he was in the Raft, taken there by the Dora Milaje, a group of elite special forces made up exclusively of women warriors from the kingdom of Wakanda. Shuri, in her capacity as the new Black Panther, could then take him from the Raft to exact vengeance against killing her father, the King of Wakanda, T'Chaka.
Here's hoping that Marvel's reading this. They can't just put all their eggs in one basket in the so-called Marvel Jesus, Deadpool. Daniel Brühl's Zemo can help with the heavy lifting, is what I'm saying. The MCU could benefit from another charismatic morally gray character and a palpable chemistry with the main character.
