Thomas Shelby returns. Cillian Murphy, fresh off his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer,” will reprise his role as the formidable gangster in a new “Peaky Blinders” film set to stream on Netflix. The film will be directed by Tom Harper, known for “Heart of Stone” and “Wild Rose,” who also helmed episodes of the series’ first season back in 2013.
A Highly Anticipated Return
Production for the film is slated to begin later this year, with a script penned by the show's creator, Steven Knight. The announcement marks the first official confirmation with a studio greenlight, bringing excitement to fans who have eagerly awaited the continuation of Tommy Shelby's story. Alongside Murphy, the production team includes producers Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley. Executive producers are Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason, with the feature being made in association with BBC Film.
Cillian Murphy expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans.”
Harper echoed this sentiment, reminiscing about the early days of the series. “When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. ‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix,” he said.
Plot Details and Production Plans
While plot details and additional casting remain under wraps, Knight previously hinted that the movie’s story would be set during World War II, promising an intense and explosive chapter in the “Peaky Blinders” saga. “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight said. “It will be an explosive chapter in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ story. No holds barred. Full on ‘Peaky Blinders’ at war.”
The original series, which debuted in 2013 on BBC Two before expanding to Netflix in 2014, became a global phenomenon. It moved to BBC One in 2019 after its fourth season won the BAFTA for Best Drama. The show concluded its six-season run in 2022, with Murphy’s character, Tommy Shelby, settling old scores and ultimately handing over the family business to his sister Ada, played by Sophie Rundle.
Cillian Murphy has remained busy since the series finale. In addition to his acclaimed role in “Oppenheimer,” he starred in and produced “Small Things Like These,” which premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Concurrently, he launched his production company Big Things Films with Alan Moloney. Murphy is currently filming “Steve,” based on Max Porter's book “Shy,” which he and Moloney are producing for Netflix under their new banner.
The forthcoming “Peaky Blinders” film promises to be a fitting continuation of the beloved series, with fans eagerly anticipating its release. The collaboration of Knight, Harper, and Murphy, along with the support of Netflix and BBC Film, suggests a production that will stay true to the gritty, compelling storytelling that made the series a hit.
As production gears up, the excitement surrounding the return of Thomas Shelby and the “Peaky Blinders” universe continues to build. The film is poised to deliver a dramatic and powerful new chapter, ensuring that the legacy of the Shelby family endures.
