Don't expect a sequel to the recent. adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
A sunken ship
SYFY Wire is highlighting some of 2023's genre films. Producer Mike Medavoy and Bradley J. Fischer spoke about The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The film is a feature-length adaptation of one chapter of Stoker's Dracula titled “The Captain's Log.”
Unfortunately, the film was a massive flop. It had a reported budget of $45 million but grossed just $21.7 million worldwide for Universal Pictures.
Despite the film setting up potential sequels, there have not been discussions for a sequel to The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the producers revealed.
“We had two Dracula movies this year, so clearly, there's a lot of imagination out there, running through the heads of creatives about what you can do with that character and story,” Fischer confessed. “Nosferatu is also coming out next year. So no, we haven't really talked about continuing Clemens' story specifically.
“But the Dracula novel is so epic and there's so much story there… I'm sure that there will be more Dracula-inspired stories and narratives that end up being committed to screen,” he continued.
If there was a sequel, however, makeup designer Göran Lundström has some ideas. “I'm sure we could do some variations because he's supposed to be going through a phase where he's gradually getting stronger and stronger,” he said. “So I'm sure we could do something and keep integrity of the design because we started off with him very emaciated… It would be cool to have a werewolf in there if they did a sequel.”
Lastly, Medavoy doesn't completely rule out a sequel happening. Despite that, he does seem anxious to move onto other projects. “I love the idea of doing different things and putting it on film,” he said. “I don't want to sound like a guy who says, ‘Hey, I only want to do this.' Give me something different.”
What's it about?
The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the crew of the Demeter who are hunted down by a vampire, Dracula (Javier Botet). Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, and Liam Cunningham star in the film. Stefan Kapičić, known for his role of Colossus in the Deadpool series, also stars in the film.
As the producers noted, there have been a lot of Dracula adaptations recently. Renfield was a more comedic take on the Bram Stoker novel, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter adapted a specific chapter of the novel.
Next year, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu will be released. The film is the third Nosferatu film, but one of many Dracula adaptations. The most notable adaptation was the 1922 German film of the same name.
