Ouch. It wasn't a great opening at all for The Marvels.

The new films from the MCS universe opened to just $47 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Additionally, overseas, it didn't fare too well, either. It debuted at $63.3 million. That makes a global start of $110 million, which if compared to 2019's Captain Marvel, which debuted at nearly $190 million, makes for pretty low numbers.

The Marvels record low box office opening

This makes it a historic worst start for a film in the MCU.

Before now, rival DC had a lot of hits and misses. For example, the Flash, a DC film, debuted at a low $55 million domestically and peaked at 270.6 million globally.

When it comes to Marvel, before now, with a $55.4 opening, was 2008's The Incredible Hulk. 2015's Ant-Man then comes in after that, with a palpable $57.2 million domestically.

With Marvel's bombing at the box office it adds to the theory that there might be some fatigue setting in on the superhero franchise. Fanboys are far less forgiving and do not get as hyped over the various titles.

This newest release from the MCU is unique. It has three female leads and was directed by Nia DaCosta – the first Black woman to direct a Marvel movie.

Whatever the case for the low opening numbers for The Marvels, the recent strikes didn't help. The cast couldn't do any promotions or publicity; however, Brie Larson and her co-stars did as much as they could once the strike ended Thursday. The Tonight Show featured Larson this past Friday, and co-stars attended opening weekend screenings in various areas.
