Mike White's The White Lotus will take his cast to Thailand. Originally, the third season of the HBO hit was supposed to take place in Japan. A tax reason is to blame for the location shift.
Tax rebates
Deadline is reporting that The White Lotus Season 3 moved to Thailand due to a tax incentive. The move to Thailand gave the HBO production a 30% rebate. Georgina Pope, a producer for Toho Tombo, revealed that for The White Lotus, the move meant $4.4 million.
This isn't the only time that a high-profile project left Japan for similar reasons. Mission: Impossible Fallout and Martin Scorsese's Silence both left Japan in similar situations — opting to shoot in other countries close by.
Mike White's The White Lotus originally premiered as a six-part limited series in July 2021. The series satirizes the rich with both seasons taking place at a fictional hotel (titled the White Lotus). It's one of HBO's biggest hits. The series, with only two seasons under its belt, has received 43 Emmy nominations (winning 10).
Season 1 featured the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Alexandra Daddario, Sydney Sweeney, Steve Zahn, and Jon Gries. The second season brought in a new cast. Though Coolidge and Gries returned. Aubrey Plaza, F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, and Will Sharpe headlined the newcomers.
A third season was announced, but very little is known about it. The WGA strike caused a pause in the writing process. A cast is also unknown as of the time of this writing.
