The end of 2023 brought with it a handful of films that were able to make a splash at the box office, riding the holiday spirit as people got to take a short break from work or school. While 2024 may have started, 2023 is still the king at the box office thanks to Wonka holding strong against new competition from horror powerhouse Blumhouse.
In its fourth weekend, Wonka once again took the number one spot at the domestic box office by adding another $14.4 million to bring its total domestic haul to $164.4 million, according to Variety. The weekend, alongside an international haul of $301 million, brings the Timothee Chalamet musical-comedy total box office earnings up to over $465 million over its four week run.

It was able to hold back Blumhouse's latest release, Night Swim, which took second place on its debut weekend with $12 million at the domestic box office. The film had a lackluster international release, as well, with $5.7 million across 36 territories to bring the worldwide total to $17.7 million.

“Critics’ reviews and audience scores are weak, but that’s not uncommon for the genre,” Franchise Entertainment Research David Gross told Variety. “Blumhouse is always disciplined with its budgets, so ‘Night Swim’ should be profitable.”
Rounding out the top five at the domestic box office was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with $10.6 million at number three, the animated film Migration took number four with $10.2 million, and number five was the comedy Anyone But You with another $9.5 million.

The musical remake of Mean Girls and Jason Statham's latest action flick The Beekeeper are two such examples, though the biggest box office fare won't start to hit theaters until March.
