The New York Giants gave new general manager Joe Schoen a mountain of work to do when he accepted the job. The team was gutted and rudderless in every area. A complete overhaul is likely to ensue as the Giants look to become a respectable team again.

Schoen first has to deal with the team's terrible contract situation, as several bloated deals have to be worked around before he can start making serious moves. New York is expected to ask Sterling Shepard, who tore his Achilles tendon late in the season, to take a pay cut.

Per Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com, Schoen said that getting the Giants' cap situation fixed is of the utmost importance.

“The reality of the situation is we have to get under the cap,” Schoen said. “We’re over the cap right now. It’s the contingency plans. Literally we have A, B, C, D, E and you gotta wait for the first shoe to fall before you make the next decision.”

Rosenblatt also named a few Giants players that could get a pay cut aside from Shepard, including defensive captain/linebacker Blake Martinez, wide receiver Darius Slayton and center Nick Gates.

Martinez and Gates both suffered injuries earlier in the season but were full-time starters the year before. Since they are on the mend, though still making progress, decreasing their cap hit makes sense.

Slayton is a sensible candidate to ask, too. He had himself a poor third season after once showing some promise with an eight-touchdown rookie campaign. Putting him on a “prove it” deal is worthwhile before the Giants decide to extend him or not.
