New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll heads into the 2022 season with hefty expectations on his plate. Among his early goals for the campaign centers on simply exploiting the potential of quarterback Daniel Jones.

Overall, Jones faces an uncertain future with the Giants. The team has until May 2 to trigger the fifth-year option in his rookie deal. If the team opts against doing so, Jones will play the 2022 campaign on the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next year.

In the big picture, Daboll is not much concerned with this matter at the moment but is rather looking ahead to working with Jones during Monday’s voluntary offseason conditioning program.

“I think Daniel – I've said this before – he's got good athleticism,” Daboll said over the NFL owners meeting. “He's made some really good throws. I'm sure there's plays that he wants back, just like everybody. I think going into it right now with Monday, we've kind of got it set the way we want it set. We're forging ahead and teaching it accordingly and we have confidence in the players that we have.”

Among Jones’ more notable strengths as a passer has been his play when on the run, although he has had his fair share of ups and downs in this area of his game.

Jones has recorded a total of 1,000 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns, but fumbles have been a constant red flag with his play; he has fumbled 36 times in 38 career games played. Just last season, Jones fumbled seven times in 11 games played, as turnovers once again marred the Giants’ production on the offensive side of the ball.

Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka lauded Jones in February as “athletic” and a passer who “can make every throw outside the pocket.” And for Daboll, he sees plenty of promise in Jones’ athleticism as well, and he is not ruling out the possibility of making this aspect of his play a focal point in the game plan on offense next season.

“He's athletic,” Daboll said. “He's big. He's strong. I know he's had some injuries. I think there's always a balancing act but at the end of the day, you've got to try to use your players the best way you can use them to try to win a game.

“Sometimes it might not start early in the season like that, but as you figure out what you are and what you need to do, you can evolve to that, it's kind of like Josh (Allen). How many quarterback runs did we really design? Probably more a little bit later in the year when it was crunch time. But again, that's knowing the player too where the guy wants the ball in his hands in the most critical moments to do that. Again, we'll find out with Daniel. I think he's got a really good skill set in that regard. How much of it we'll do? You never know.”

Jones missed the Giants’ final six games of the regular season last year due to a neck injury. Daboll added that the third-year quarterback “should be ready to go” to take part in the Giants’ upcoming offseason program on Monday.

Much attention sure will center on just how Daboll, Kafka and Jones will mesh in the 2022 campaign.
