Glen Powell shot down the rumors that Twisters is a reboot or continuation of the 1996 film, Twister.

Not a reboot, sequel, or continuation?

Speaking to Vogue about the film, which he recently wrapped, Powell was adamant that Twisters was its own standalone story.

“It’s definitely not a reboot,” he claimed. “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.

“I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.’”

Twister was a huge hit in 1996, grossing nearly $500 million at the box office. Speed director Jan de Bont helmed the initial film. The likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Bill Paxton, and Helen Hunt starred in the film.

In the new film, which is helmed by Lee Isaac Chung, Powell is a part of a star-studded ensemble. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, and Nope standout Brandon Perea all star in the film. Universal will distribute the film in July 2024.

Glen Powell has recently gained a lot of fame thanks to his role in Top Gun: Maverick. In the sequel, he played “Hangman,” the film's equivalent to “Iceman” from the first film. He would go on to star in Hit Man and Devotion after the Top Gun sequel.

Earlier this month, Powell starred in the new rom-com, Anyone But You, with Sydney Sweeney.
