Golf is not a sport that often gets testy, but there was some controversy at the Dell Technologies Match Play on Friday. Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson had a bit of a confrontation on the 11th hole. Johnson missed a birdie putt from about eight feet and went on to knock the ball away. In golf, this is an illegal move if the concession is not asked for before.
Kevin Na calmly tapped Johnson and the shoulder and asked him he needs to wait for the putt to be conceded before knocking the ball away, even from only 6 inches out. Na said that distance doesn't matter, Johnson still needs to get the ok from Na. He did not want the frustration from Johnson to disqualify his par on the hole so he explained his position to Johnson instead of forcing him to take a penalty.
Kevin Na insists there are no hard feelings between the two after the match. Na went on to win on the 18th hole after some Johnson struggles on the 12th and 17th holes. These struggles lead to continued frustration from Johnson, but they both insist that all is well between the two.
According to ESPN, Na believed he made the correct decision.
“I think it's the right thing to do. We all know he can make a 6-inch putt, so I think I did the right thing.”
The golf world seems to remain one of little confrontation even after a testy par 3 on Friday.
