Ahead of his Wolverine return in the MCU's Deadpool 3, Hugh Jackman feels “better than ever” after a quarter-century playing the character.

During a story for Vanity Fair about the upcoming project, Jackman seemed excited about his return. He explained how this take on his character differs from before.

“I instinctively knew that Deadpool was going to allow us to get a different side of the [Wolverine] character that I've ever played before, in every way, from emotion, humor, dialogue, and action,” Jackman said. “Everything felt new and fresh to me. And I'd be sharing it with Ryan [Reynolds] and Shawn [Levy], who are two of my best friends.

“The three of us are like the Three Amigos. There was not a day where I wasn't in tears laughing. I felt so rejuvenated playing the part. I mean, I'm 25 years in, man, and. it feels better than ever,” he continued.

The part of Wolverine helped launch Jackman's career. He made his debut as the character in X-Men. This was just his third part in a movie at that point in his career.

He continued playing the part for Fox's X-Men universe until 2017. Jackman led six total X-Men movies and also received a trilogy of solo movies (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and Logan).

After years away from the part, Jackman will make his return in Deadpool 3. In the movie, Jackman is seemingly playing a variant of the iconic character. After all, his iteration died at the end of Logan.

His other notable credits include The Prestige, Flushed Away, Happy Feet, Les Misérables, and The Greatest Showman. Jackman first collaborated with Levy on Real Steel in 2011. He also had a cameo in Free Guy, which Reynolds starred in.

Similarly, Reynolds goes back with Deadpool 3 director Levy. Their first collaboration was Free Guy in 2021. They followed that up with The Adam Project in 2022.

But beyond Deadpool 3, could Jackman continue playing the part? The multiverse plays a big part in the MCU and two more Avengers movies are on the horizon.

Perhaps this won't be Jackman's final time playing the part. There is always a chance he can return as Deadpool 3's variant of Wolverine or a completely new one in future team-up movies.

Kelsey Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men movies, returned in The Marvels. That is another opportunity for Jackman to reunite with his old on-screen teammates.

What is Deadpool 3 about?

Deadpool 3 picks up years after the last movie. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is recruited by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) for a high-stakes mission that will team him with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). This mission will have major implications for the MCU's timeline.

Aside from Reynolds and Jackman, Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) also star in the movie. Corrin plays the antagonist Cassandra Nova. Macfadyen plays TVA agent Paradox.

Former Deadpool actors Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapičić will also reprise their roles from the previous movies.

Making their bombshell return to the comic book movie genre is Jennifer Garner. She will reprise her role of Elektra after playing the part in the 2003 Ben Affleck-led Daredevil. In 2005, Garner got her own solo movie. Garner previously starred in The Adam Project with Reynolds.

The movie was co-written by Levy, Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. Shawn Levy's MCU movie is the lone feature movie release slated for 2024. Disney and Marvel Studios are likely hoping that Deadpool 3 is able to turn their recent box office lull around.
