Superhero and comic book movies historically demanded impressive physiques from stars portraying these heroes on screen, and few have imbodied this notion quite like Hugh Jackman during his time as Wolverine. This was the case for the Australian-born actor once again as he returns to the role for Deadpool and Wolverine, and while the physical training may have been demanding, it was not the hardest part of the whole process according to Jackman, himself.
While speaking with People, the actor shared some insight into the training process that goes with getting into Wolverine-worthy shape at 55-years-old and the challenges his age brings with it. He admitted the physical-side of it was fairly easy for him thanks to changes he made to his training regimen over the years, such as adding dance into his stunt training.
“When I came back to it, it was really fun and I was thrilled,” Hugh Jackman said. “My body was a little sore at the beginning, but I was thrilled that my body was still responding. And I realized how good it is for your brain.”
He then said the real challenge he always faced with such demanding training was how much he had to eat.
“But the hardest bit…the food,” Jackman said. ““I have to eat a lot. For me, for my body type, I'm naturally skinny. To get the size on, that's the hardest bit. That's the bit that does my head in.”
Ryan Reynolds echoed this, stating that six to seven meals a day comprised of largely foods that fit with the physical training isn't something that anyone “would really necessarily enjoy.”
The most striking example of this is Dwayne Johnson who, even at 52-years-old, boasts one of the most impressive physiques in the entertainment industry. His diet, alone, has become the subject of public fascination due to the sheer amount of food he has to eat as result of how demanding his training is, with meals typically comprised of eggs, chicken, potatoes or rice, and various vegetables.
Most training diets, including the ones Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds had to prepare for Deadpool and Wolverine, looks fairly similar to Johnson's, though quantity is much smaller when compared to the former-professional wrestler.
Time for a Third Act Flashback
Hugh Jackman's latest outing as Wolverine marks his tenth turn as the X-Man, though it will be his first time portraying the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was originally believed that 2017's Logan would be his final portrayal of the character, though he admitted to having a “change of heart” after speaking with Reynolds about his vision for Deadpool 3.
The film follows Deadpool who, since the events of Deadpool 2, has given up his mercenary life and settled into a quieter living as a used car salesman. Things are quickly thrown into chaos, though, when he is recruited by the Time Variance Authority to stop an existential threat to his universe, a threat that requires the aid of an even more reluctant Wolverine variant to stop.
Deadpool and Wolverine is scheduled to release in theaters on July 26, 2024.
