Despite the rocky year it has been at the box office in 2024, Inside Out 2 has been enjoying an all-time historic run of success as Pixar's latest work continues to rack in cash in record time. This was punctuated on only the film's second weekend in theaters as it the animated feature sits atop the 2024 box office, blowing past every other hit in what looks like relative ease.

Racing to the Top

Starting with the domestic box office, Inside Out 2 is set to end the weekend with another $100 million haul and has become the first animated film to do so, bringing the domestic total to $355.2 million after only eleven days in theaters. The domestic box office only fell around 35 percent which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, makes it the “best hold of any film in history that opened to $150 million or more.”

This was boosted with an overseas haul of $164.4 million to bring Inside Out 2's worldwide haul for its second weekend in theaters to $264.4 million.

Inside Out 2 characters surrounded by money

The exclamation point on all this is the film's worldwide total, which will end Sunday at around $724.4 million to make Inside Out 2 the highest-grossing film of 2024. Dune Part 2 previously held the top spot with a worldwide haul of $711.1 million from its roughly month-and-a-half long run in theaters.

The general feeling among several analysts and outlets is Inside Out 2 will likely cross the $1 billion threshold in the coming weeks if it continues to performing as well as it has at the box office. It will have help from additional overseas markets, as well, where the animated feature has yet to hit theaters.

If it does cross the $1 billion mark, it will be the first film to do so since Barbie which ended its theatrical run with a worldwide haul of $1.445 billion to make it the highest-grossing film of 2023.

It would also be the first Pixar film to cross $1 billion since Toy Story 4's $1.073 billion worldwide haul in 2019 to be the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2019, with Avengers: Endgame being a distant number one with a worldwide total of $2.799 billion.

The question then becomes if there is any film set to release by the end of 2024 that could keep pace or possibly even out-gross Inside Out 2.

Challengers to the Throne?

One potential challenger could be Despicable Me 4, which is set to release on July 3, 2024. The franchise, which encompasses the Despicable Me and Minions films, has two $1 billion hits under its belt with Despicable Me 3 and the first Minions, so it stands to reason Despicable Me 4 may be able to keep pace with Inside Out 2.

Deadpool and Wolverine may be able to challenge Inside Out 2's success, as well. The first two Deadpool films both made over $780 million at the box office during their respective runs, and the addition of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Marvel Studios' marketing power may be the pieces needed to get Deadpool's third theatrical outing over the $1 billion hump when it releases on July 26, 2024.

Finally there is Joker: Folie a Deux, the sequel to the massively successful Joker released in 2019 and starring Joaquin Phoenix. The first film ended being a massive box office hit with a worldwide haul of $1.079 billion, making it the first R-rated film to ever cross the $1 billion mark. A higher production budget and addition of music megastar Lady Gaga could prove enough to recapture the box office magic of the first Joker to see the film laugh and sing its way to success.
