Before Inside Out 2 has come out, a Disney+ spin-off series has been announced. Pete Docter, who directed the first movie, teased its plot. The Pixar series will deal with the Dream Production that makes Riley's dreams.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pixar COO Docter teased the upcoming Disney+ Inside Out spin-off series. He revealed that the series is coming out sooner than expected in 2025.

“We have finished. It's coming out next spring. I'm not sure that there's been a specific release date,” Docter said of the upcoming Disney+ series, continuing, “Remember we go to Dream Production to see how Riley's dreams are made? It semi-explains why they're so weird.

“We've continued the exploration of the power of dreams and how they affect us in our waking life, as well. So it's pretty cool,” he added.

Continuing Inside Out

In the same interview, Docter was asked about Inside Out 2 being made. The first film was a huge hit, grossing over $850 million at the box office. A sequel took nearly a decade to make, so when did the idea for a sequel come along?

“Even as we were working on it, I was like, ‘Boy, there's enough to make another movie here.' But my thought was, ‘Let's just really wrap it up nicely in a bow and give it to the audiences,'” Docter recalled. “It wasn't until, I guess, fall of '19 [0r] early '20 that there had been enough other people talking about it. It still felt like it was a part of the zeitgeist.

“We said at the beginning, [that] if there's nothing there that we all think has a deeper resonance, we won't do it. But when Kelsey came back with Anxiety as a character and a plot line, all of us were like, ‘That was a huge part of my junior high existence. I think there's something there.' We could personalize it in a way that allows people to have [the] ability to talk about that vague feeling of nerves and tension,” he continued.

What is Inside Out 2 about?

The upcoming Inside Out 2 picks up a couple of years after Docter's 2015 movie. It follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) as she hits puberty. While she is invited to a hockey camp that can determine her high school career, Riley is torn between sticking with her old friends and impressing the high schoolers.

Inside her mind, Riley's emotions, Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) are faced with a new obstacle.

New emotions are introduced to the fray. Anxiety (Maya Hawke) leads the way. Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) join Anxiety.

They send the OG emotions on a quest to the back of Riley's mind after discarding her sense of self. The crew has to recover it before the weekend ends.

Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann in her directorial debut. She replaces Pete Docter who directed the first movie. Meg LeFauve returned from the first movie to co-write the script. Dave Holstein co-wrote the script with LeFauve.
