Disney+‘s upcoming Lilo and Stitch live-action remake is coming out sooner than you think.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Lilo and Stitch live-action remake is expected to come out in 2024. That is coming soon after the film wrapped production, per the report.

Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) will direct the film. Per THR's report, Jon M. Chu was originally in talks to direct the film. Instead, Chu directed the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked.

It has been a long road to get the film off the ground. THR notes that Disney green-lit the Lilo and Stitch live-action remake in 2018 and was supposed to commence filming in 2020. However, the pandemic caused that to be delayed until spring 2023.

Before filming could conclude, the SAG-AFTRA strike hit in July 2023 and caused another delay. The live-action remake was not able to pick up filming again until February 2024. Filming wrapped the following month.

Currently, the Lilo and Stitch remake is in post-production. A release date has not been revealed but the film will more than likely be worked on up until it comes out.

Maia Kealoho will play Lilo in the upcoming remake. She stars alongside Sydney Elizebeth Agudong and Kaipo Dudoit as Nani and David Kawena, respectively.

The remake will feature returning cast members from the original animated film. Chris Sanders, who created the character and voiced Stitch, is among the returning actors. Tia Carrere will play a new character named Mrs. Kekoa after voicing Nani in the animated film. Amy Hill, who portrayed Mrs. Hasagawa in the animated film, plays Tūtū after playing Mrs. Hasagawa.

What is Lilo and Stitch?

Lilo and Stitch is a 2002 animated Disney film written and directed by the duo of Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. The film served as the directorial debuts for both Sanders and DeBlois.

It follows the two title characters who develop a close bond through the Hawaiian concept of extended family. Lilo is being raised by her sister and is dealing with the death of her parents. Stitch is genetically engineered to cause chaos and initially attempts to use Lilo to avoid being recaptured by an intergalactic federation.

Lilo and Stitch was a box office hit. It grossed over $273 million on a budget of $80 million. The original animated film was released in June 2022, right in time for the summer season.

Chris Sanders, Daveigh Chase, Tia Carrere, Ving Rhames, and Jason Scott Lee starred in the film. David Ogden Stiers, Kevin McDonald, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Zoe Caldwell also starred in it.

Disney's live-action remakes

Disney is not new to making live-action remakes of their classic animated films such as Lilo and Stitch. It has been a lucrative business for them. Remakes such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Alice in Wonderland all made over $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

Previously, Disney+ released a Pinocchio and Lady and the Tramp live-action remake on their streaming service before Lilo and Stitch. Other live-action remakes include Peter Pan and Wendy and Mulan (the latter was released via Premiere Access on Disney+ in the United States).
