The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff has made it clear that they want position battles across the board to help boost up the competition on the team. While in theory that's fine, not naming Trevor Lawrence the starting quarterback at this point seems silly.

It's not a knock against Gardner Minshew who's a good quarterback himself. But the Jaguars drafted Lawrence No. 1 overall for a reason and it's to play him from the start. Teasing Minshew along isn't going to do the team or him any good.

On Thursday, via the Florida Times-Union, Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell updated the quarterback situation while still claiming it's an open gig up for grabs.

“We’re still going to handle it that way until we end up making the final decision,” Bevell said. “Right now, they are still status quo. We’re trying to make everybody better. We want competition at each and every position. Both guys are getting better because of it.”

Bevell also mentioned that Lawrence is in line to start the second preseason game for the Jaguars after starting the first as well. He noted swiftly that it isn't an indicator that Jacksonville has made a decision as to who will be the starting quarterback/

It all seems a bit odd. This isn't a quarterback dilemma like the Denver Broncos are having with Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater. It seems pretty cut-and-dry for the Jaguars and it's likely just a matter of time before they shock nobody when they name Lawrence the starting quarterback for Week 1.
