Why Japan Will Beat Costa Rica

Japan, the only Asian country to participate in all nine Women's World Cup tournaments, displayed dominance in their opener against Zambia, securing a convincing 5-0 victory. Hinata Miyazawa broke the deadlock just before halftime and scored her second goal in the second half. Additionally, Mina Tanaka, Jun Endō, and Riko Ueki contributed with goals in the second half.

Japan currently holds the top position in Group C.  Japan aims to continue their excellent form, seeking qualification for the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive edition, as they have qualified for the knockout stage in the last three editions and made it to the final in two of those appearances. They have shown good form, scoring five goals in each of their previous two matches. Japan also holds a strong record against teams from CONCACAF, winning 15 out of 25 meetings, except against the USA.

Japan has a strong track record, having qualified for the knockout rounds in every edition since winning the tournament in 2011. Despite some inconsistency in their preparations, they ended their final build-up match with a resounding 5-0 win against Panama. With a total of 10 goals scored in their last two matches without conceding any, Japan's strength is evident.

Japan's history in the Women's World Cup highlights its significance on the global stage. This being their eighth participation in the tournament, Japan stands among the most successful nations, having claimed the title in 2011. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 in the last edition in 2019.

Another win in their next match will put them in a great position to advance to the knockout stage. The two teams met only once before, in a friendly match in 2017, where Japan comfortably won 3-0 at home.

Hinata Miyazawa, a midfielder from Mynavi Sendai, showcased her talent by scoring two goals in the opening match, playing a vital role in Japan's impressive victory. Another standout player is Mina Tanaka, a forward from Kobe Leonessa, who not only scored a goal but also provided an assist. Yui Hasegawa, Riko Ueki, Jun Endo, and captain Saki Kumagai are bracing for some tactical advantages on the pitch.

Why Costa Rica Will Beat Japan

In their debut appearance at the World Cup in 2015, Las Ticas went winless, and their return last week didn't fare much better, as they once again failed to record a shot on target, marking the fourth time in six games that they couldn't find the back of the net.

Costa Rica Women experienced a 3-0 defeat against Spain in their first World Cup appearance since 2015. With one corner kick, 12 free kicks, and 18% ball possession, La Sele aims to improve that record in their upcoming encounter. While their chances of reaching the knockout stages are limited, fans will hope for a better performance.

Now, they face the possibility of another group stage exit if they lose against Japan. Amelia Valverde's charges are ranked 36th in the world and qualified for the tournament by finishing third in last year's CONCACAF Championship. However, they have struggled since then, with only two wins in their last 19 fixtures, suffering defeat in 14 of those matches. Additionally, in three of their last five matches, they failed to score. With another match ahead, the team is under pressure to perform well, knowing that another loss could lead to an early elimination.

Leading the Costa Rican team is Raquel Rodriguez, a star from the Portland Thorns, who has scored 55 international goals in 100 caps. Katherine Alvarado, a midfielder from Saprissa, is also an essential player for the team, having scored 21 goals in 125 matches for the national side. The team also relies on strong supporting talent from players like Priscila Chinchilla, Melissa Herrera, Cristín Granados, and María Paula Salas.

Final Japan-Costa Rica Prediction & Pick

Japan may likely deliver another critical blow to Costa Rica's chances of reaching the next stage. Luck will surely be on the side of Costa Rica if they can nudge at least one in this fixture, but a comfortable win for Japan is foreseeable.

Final Japan-Costa Rica Prediction & Pick: Japan (-1900), Over 2.5 goals (-300)
