Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets are currently in the midst of what figures to be a highly important offseason as for the future direction of the franchise following a disastrous 2023-24 campaign. After his high profile trade from the Green Bay Packers the previous offseason, Rodgers went down just a few snaps into the 2023 Jets season with a ruptured Achilles and was never able to make it time to finish out the season despite constantly hinting to the media that he was planning on doing so.

Rodgers has long tried to paint himself as something of a mysterious figure in the NFL world, and that trend continued earlier this week when Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that Rodgers had missed mandatory minicamp due to an unexcused absence, which drew speculation as to what it could have been, considering things like family related matters or other legitimate reasons are almost always excused.

One person who believes he has intel on the situation is none other than sports media personality Colin Cowherd, who recently took to his own show The Herd With Colin Cowherd on FS1 to relay the latest information about what Rodgers could possibly have been doing.

“I was told last night from a source I trust Aaron's on vacation and it's overseas. I'm also told you'll learn about where he's at tomorrow,” said Cowherd, via The Herd with Colin Cowherd on YouTube. “Don't want to burn my source, I'm told you'll learn about it tomorrow. Maybe he is at an event, can't believe there's something overseas that would take 7,8,9 days, again maybe they have a music festival. But the point is don't be surprised by this, this is sort of what you would expect. Impulsive owner, new GM, coach with a losing record, prickly older, at times arrogant, disconnected quarterback in New York City. With a pretty Relentless and unarguably massive press core.”

While it's unclear just who exactly Cowherd's “source” is or whether he is truly in the know within the Jets' camp, if this is true, it wouldn't be a very good sign for Jets fans hoping to see a fully engaged and motivated Rodgers take the field this year.

A strange absence

Of course, Rodgers is far from the only NFL player to miss mandatory minicamp. Elsewhere, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers and CeeDee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys are also sitting out in the hopes of securing long term contracts.

However, Rodgers of course has his pockets more than secured and is missing Jets' camp for reasons that appear to be entirely unrelated to financial concerns. Quarterback of course is by far the most important position in football both in terms of on the field production as well as team chemistry and locker room camaraderie, and for Rodgers to make this his first impression of the new season to his teammates, coaches, and fans, likely doesn't bode well for a Jets squad looking to finally embark on a deep playoff run for the first time in over a decade this year.
