With a surplus of young big men already cemented on their roster, the Sacramento Kings waived Center Deyonta Davis on Saturday.

With young bigs like Marvin Bagley, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Harry Giles needing minutes, it was tough to envision Davis finding a role.

The 7-foot rim-protector played the first two years of his career in Memphis, sparingly seeing minutes throughout his tenure. He played in 62 games last season, averaging 5.8 points and 4 .0 rebounds while shooting an impressive 60.8 percent from the field.

Drafted by the Boston Celtics with the first pick in the second round of the 2016 draft, Davis had been a nice fit in Memphis due to injuries involving their main frontline guys. With the departure of Zach Randolph followed by injuries to Marc Gasol, Jarell Martin, and Brandan Wright, Davis found himself playing solid minutes for the Grizzlies.

He had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds on March 21st against the Philadelphia 76ers and averaged nine points and seven rebounds the final five games of the season. Davis scored in double-digits 14 times last season, including three straight games to end December.

Davis shouldn't be out of work for too long. He is just 21 years old and has shown that he can be a reliable presence off the bench, even if it's just for emergency situations.

In today's NBA, a big and athletic player always seems to be able to find a spot on a roster.
