Detroit Lions tight end T.J. Hockenson's rookie season was cut short by an ankle injury, but he is well on his way to 100 percent after intense rehab this offseason.

On Thanksgiving, Hockenson suffered a gruesome ankle injury when his ankle rolled underneath his body. He was placed on Injured Reserve shortly afterward, and the last time he was in front of the media he was still on a scooter in order to get around the locker room.

Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell provided an update on Wednesday saying that Hockenson was in the running part of the rehab. Bevell said, via MLive.com:

“As far as I know right now, he’s in his running part of the protocol. He’s on land, he’s running, he’s running routes, doing that thing. You can’t say he’s 100 percent yet, but I think he’s well on the way to getting there … He’s done a great job with his rehab, he’s always been a good worker that way. I know he’s going to get some time with Matthew [Stafford], throwing and catching. So yeah, I’m comfortable with where he’s at with the rehab part.”

The injury was a disappointing end to a rookie season that showed so much early promise. In his first game for the Lions, Hockenson caught six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. The rest of the season he didn't fare as well, especially after Stafford suffered his own injury, but the expectations are still high heading into the 2020 season.

As long as he is healthy, there is no reason he shouldn't be a big part of the Lions offense going forward.
