Bad news for New York Mets fans: their team fell 10 spots in the MLB Draft Lottery.

The Mets fell from ninth to 19th in the MLB Draft Lottery on Tuesday, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

“News: The Mets did not receive a Top 6 pick in Major League Baseball's draft lottery…As such, their pick will not be protected from CBT penalties, which means the Mets will drop 10 spots from ninth overall to 19th,” DiComo tweeted on Tuesday.

The Cleveland Guardians secured the No. 1 overall selection of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday. It marks the first time Cleveland will select first overall in franchise history. The Guardians defied the odds despite a scant two percent chance of getting the top overall pick.

The Mets will rebuild in 2024

On the other hand, the Mets had a 4.3 percent chance (seventh-best overall) of snagging the No. 1 overall selection next year. Instead, New York, which won 76 games last season, plummeted 10 spots in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The Mets had high hopes entering the 2023 MLB season. They had Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso in their lineup. New York wanted to build on the success of its 101-win season in 2021.

Instead, things fell apart at the seams in Buck Showalter's second season as Mets manager. New York eventually dealt Verlander and Scherzer prior to the MLB trade deadline.

Max Scherzer earned his second career World Series ring following the Texas Rangers' conquest of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Fall Classic. For their part, the Mets missed the postseason for the sixth time in the past seven years. They eventually dismissed Buck Showalter at season's end.

The Mets have been mired in mediocrity for the past several years. Since they dropped 10 spots in the 2024 MLB Draft, they should play with the cards they were dealt.
