New York Mets owner Steve Cohen hasn't been far from the MLB spotlight since purchasing the team. First, Cohen and the Mets made a splash by trading for former Cleveland Guardians shortstop Francisco Lindor. Then, before the lockout cut the offseason short, Cohen's Mets went on an all-out spending spree, doling out an absurd amount of money to three free agents, including superstar pitcher Max Scherzer. The billionaire Mets' owner is in the spotlight again amid the lockout, this time for liking a tweet shading the MLB owners, who have taken an interesting stance on competitive balance tax negotiations. Cohen hilariously feigned ignorance when questioned about his like of the tweet, as reported by the New York Post.
Cohen told The Post’s Joel Sherman that the like was “totally unintentional,” and that “he does not even know how to retweet.”
Basically, Mets owner Steve Cohen liked a tweet by a Kansas City Royals blogger saying that the owners wanted to end the lockout on their terms, rather than the players. Cohen was sneakily shading the owners, who have since attempted to negotiate something into the competitive balance tax to curb “runaway spending.”
Gee, which team just did something like that? Oh yea, the Mets! When asked about liking the tweet, Cohen said that it was “totally unintentional” and that “he doesn't even know how to retweet” in one of the most dog-ate-my-homework responses of all time.
Cohen definitely didn't take kindly to the MLB owners' most recent lockout strategy and made it known by liking this tweet. And hilariously feigning ignorance afterward.
