There's bad, and then there's the Chicago White Sox. With a 27-84 record, the Sox are far and away the worst team in the majors right now, and it looks like it's going to be quite a while until they become a competitive team again. It's been a staggering fall from grace considering they had a .500 record just two years ago in 2022, and all eyes have quickly pointed locked in on manager Pedro Grifol.

Grifol took over as the team's manager in 2023, and Chicago endured a pretty rough 61-101 campaign. Grifol was given a shot to turn things around, but the result has been one of the worst seasons in the MLB in recent memory. It seems like Grifol's time with the team is coming to an end, and according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Chicago could opt to fire him at any moment now.

White Sox firing Pedro Grifol seems inevitable

With a 24.3 win percentage, the White Sox are on pace to have the second-worst season in the modern era of the MLB, with only the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics having a worse win percentage than them currently. Of course, there's still a lot of baseball left to be played, but it seems like a certainty that Chicago is going to be regarded as one of the worst teams in MLB history for quite some time.

In Grifol's case, there simply isn't anything that can be done to come back for him. The White Sox aren't in a rush to win this year, so they don't have that extra incentive to fire Grifol, but at this point, it seems like all baseball fans are in agreement. It's only a matter of time until he gets fired, and it could realistically happen at any point between now and the end of the season.

Where the White Sox go from here remains to be seen. They have very little major league talent, and their farm system isn't exactly stacked with talent. They did well to move on from some players at the trade deadline in an effort to beef up their prospect pool but they have a long way to go before they are competent again.

It's shocking that this is what things have come to for Chicago, and while this isn't solely Grifol's fault, he has done nothing to help make them a better team. As a result, he will almost surely get the ax in the near future, and according to Rosenthal, it wouldn't be a surprise if he doesn't make it through the 2024 campaign.
