It is not every day that two teams complete a catcher-for-catcher swap trade, but the Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays did just that on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the White Sox have acquired Reese McGuire in exchange for Zack Collins.

Collins featured in three seasons with the White Sox, which included serving as the backup catcher for Yasmani Grandal in the 2021 campaign. Collins wound up logging career highs in both games played (78) and at-bats (195) over the season. He did see his playing time diminish in the second half of the campaign amid Seby Zavala’s emergence at the catcher position.

Overall, Collins’ future with the White Sox was much in question before this trade, as he was slated to be behind Grandal and Zavala in their catcher depth chart this season. More so, he has a mere one minor league option remaining.

On the other hand, McGuire’s roller-coaster tenure in Toronto has come to an end after four seasons. Just last year, he was designated for assignment by the team in April, but after clearing waivers, he ended up staying put and went on to play in a career-high 78 games.

Unlike Collins, McGuire does not have any options left on his contract. As it stands, he may be tabbed over Zavala to be the backup catcher for the White Sox in the 2022 season.

The Blue Jays and the White Sox head into the season as keen contenders to win their respective divisions.
