The Los Angeles Dodgers have a strong foundation in place to be competitive for the long term, and now it looks as if they're working to keep their manager at the helm going forward, too. According to The Athletic, the Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to extend the contract of Dave Roberts ahead of the 2022 MLB season, and the Dodgers' skipper is confident a deal will get done in short order.
“When I stop loving my job, then I’ll have no problem walking away,” Roberts said via The Athletic. “Regardless. Yes, winning a championship, another championship and more, is the goal. But for me, I know that it gives the Dodgers the best chance to do that, if I do my job with complete passion, conviction and commitment. If I can do that, I think, on my end of things, that helps us get to where we want to get to. If I feel like I can’t do that and deliver that, it’s time for me to move on.”
Roberts has been the Dodgers' manager since 2016, and has enjoyed one of the franchise's best-ever spells. During his tenure as manager, Roberts has amassed a record of 542-339, having won three National League pennants and one World Series throughout his six years with the club. The Dodgers have won the NL West in every year of his tenure, except for 2021 when the San Francisco Giants stunningly won 107 games.
The Dodgers won 106 games last year but bowed out in the NLCS at the hands of the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves. Despite last year's shortcomings, Roberts has full confidence that he'll be in Los Angeles for a long time to come.
