On Tuesday night, the New York Mets myriad of injuries continued. First, they lost MVP candidate Pete Alonso in the second inning after he was hit on the hand by a fastball from Padres starter Yu Darvish. The former National League rookie of the year went diving to the ground in pain. He was checked out by trainers and immediately taken from the game.
Later in the inning, Mets outfielder Starling Marte left the game with quad tightness. He was injured while attempting to steal a base.
The Mets have since released initial X-ray results on Alonso's right hand.
UPDATE: X-rays on Pete Alonso's right hand came back negative, the Mets say. No broken bones for now, though he'll undergo further tests to be certain.
Separately, Starling Marte left the game due to left quad tightness.

Thankfully for New York, the initial results did not show any broken bones. He will however still undergo further tests. Marte, on the other hand, will undergo imaging via an MRI on his quad on Wednesday. The results will determine whether or not a stint on the injured list is needed for the outfielder.
The Mets have been decimated by injuries thus far this season. New York ace Jacob DeGrom has not pitched this season as he works his way back from a shoulder injury. Fellow ace Max Scherzer then was placed on the 15-day IL recently with an oblique injury. Yet, despite the injuries to two of the best pitches in all of baseball, the Mets still entered Tuesday's game 38-19. That's good enough for the best record in the National League and second in the majors to their cross town rival Yankees.
The Mets ended up dropping the game to the Padres 7-0. But the bigger concern is for the health of their stars.
