The New York Mets have had to play a large part of the regular season without their top two pitchers. Max Scherzer has been out with an oblique injury since mid-May. Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom has yet to pitch in the regular season.

Roughly halfway through the season, things are starting to look up for the ball club. DeGrom is expected to begin his rehabilitation with the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday. The Mets' minor league affiliate tweeted the announcement Saturday afternoon.

This is huge for the Mets. Originally, there was no clear timeline for deGrom's return to the mound. After a few outings in spring training, the star pitcher suffered a stress reaction in his right scapula.

While there still isn't an exact return date for deGrom, we can take an educated guess. Scherzer began his rehabilitation assignment with St. Lucie on June 21, just a little over two weeks before his expected return on July 7. Based on this, there's a possibility that deGrom could also have a similar timeline from rehabilitation to return, and could be on the mound for the Mets towards the middle/end of July.

Of course, both pitchers are recovering from completely different injuries. Scherzer's oblique injury took a lot less time to come back from. He missed a little under two months, while deGrom has yet to play outside of spring training. In fact, he hasn't played in the regular season since July 7 of last year.

DeGrom's return date is to be determined, but he's certainly making strides in rejoining the Mets sooner than later.
