The New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 Sunday. In victory, the Mets earned their 40th win of the season in just their 62 game. That is tied for the second-fewest games in franchise history to reach that mark. The only other time the Mets won 40 games quicker were the 1986 New York Mets, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
The Mets reached 40 wins in just their 62nd game of the season, tied for the 2nd fewest games to 40 wins in a season in Mets history.

1986 is the last time they won the World Series. That season, it took only 56 games to get their 40th win. That is a special team. This year's version of the Mets hopes to join them in franchise history.
What makes what New York has done this year more remarkable is how they've done it. The best pitcher on the team, and possibly in all of baseball, Jacob DeGrom, is yet to pitch this season. He is still recovering from shoulder surgery and is expected back some time in July.
They also lost one of the other best pitchers in all of baseball, Max Scherzer, last month due to injury. Scherzer began throwing bullpen sessions and could face live hitters later this week.
In their absence, Zach Wheeler has proved that last season was a fluke.
But it's been the Mets offense that has really carried them. Francisco Lindor has been a welcomed addition to the lineup. J.D. Davis and Jeff McNeil have resurrected their careers. But its been the power and clutch-hitting of Pete Alonso that has really stood out. Alonso has 18 home runs and has driven a Major League best 57 runs.
When this team is full strength, it will be very interesting how dangerous this club can be.
