The San Diego Padres acquired Yu Darvish and Blake Snell via trades earlier this offseason, and they continue to make strides by inking star shortshop Fernando Tatis Jr. to a huge 14-year extension worth $340 million guaranteed, per Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The total guarantee is close to $340 million, according to sources.

That's a massive extension for one of the best players in the game. Tatis is only 22 years old and just was named the cover athlete for “MLB The Show 21” and has quickly become one of the faces of baseball for many reasons.
The Padres are set to compete for the NL West crown and reach their first World Series since 1998 and General Manager AJ Preller has won the offseason in every regard.
Tatis played in 84 games his rookie year and finished with a .317 batting average with 22 homers and 53 RBI in a season cut short due to injury. He followed that up with an impressive campaign in 2020 in the COVID-19 shortened season. He posted a .277 average with 17 homers and 45 RBI in 59 games as the Padres made their way back into the postseason.
For Tatis and the Padres, this is no surprise. He came over in the James Shields trade as a teenager and the Padres developed and groomed him in their farm system. He made national headlines last year after the infamous 3-0 grand slam as the Padres became known as Slam Diego.
He's one of the best defenders in all of baseball and can create havoc on the bases at any moment. With all that being said, Tatis will be a Padre for the next 15 years at least as Preller continues to hit home runs in the offseason.
The Los Angeles Dodgers just won the World Series last season but make no mistake, this Padres team will be really good in 2021 and going forward.
