Moon Knight episode 5 easter eggs

Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac, Marvel, Entertainment

The realm of Duat

Episode five sees more of Tawaret and her responsibility to deliver Marc and Steven's souls to the realm of Duat. After the events of previous episodes when Harrow shot them, the pair now has to work together to balance their hearts on the Scales of Justice to get out of this realm.

In Egyptian mythology, Duat is known as the realm of the dead where souls proceed after dying. Osiris is acknowledged as the god of this underworld as he represents the cycle of rebirth and life after death. Furthermore, Duat acts as a residence for countless demons and Egyptian gods, such as Thoth, Horus, Anubis, and Maat.

Even though Duat is similar to common conceptions of Hell in other forms of belief, where guilty souls are tormented, Egyptian mythology places this realm as the denial of a proper afterlife to those who deserve them. This concept leads to the belief that sinful individuals will then cease to exist, which was believed to be much worse back then.

The Scales of Justice

As mentioned earlier, Tawaret instructed both Marc and Steven to balance their hearts on a scale to prevent them from reaching Duat. This is believed to be the Scales of Justice.

In Egyptian mythology, these scales are used by Anubis, the god of death, to measure the heart of a deceased person. On the other end is a feather of Ma'at, the god of justice. This process will help Anubis decide whether the dead soul will proceed to an afterlife in the Fields of Reeds or cease to exist in the realm of Duat.

Randall's Goldfish drawing

At some point during the episode, Steven explored the different rooms inside the psychiatric ward to discover more of Marc's history. The usually calm personality does this in order to balance the scales on which their hearts are placed upon and prevent them from reaching Duat.

In doing so, Steven discovers a young Marc with his parents, Elias and Wendy, and a younger brother named Randall. Before the brothers set off, Marc was seen playfully mocking his brother's drawing of a goldfish with one fin. This is a callback to Moon Knight episode one and Steven's pet goldfish.

In that episode, Steven was seen caring for a goldfish with one fin in his apartment. After blacking out and losing control of the body to Marc, Steven returned to his place after several days, only to discover that his pet already has two fins. He then proceeds to the pet shop where Steven purchased the fish and asks him what happened to it.

In a way, Steven's ownership of a one-fin goldfish as his pet harkens back to that traumatic day he got his brother killed.

The death of Layla's father

With Steven exploring Marc's history, the pair stumbles upon the night Layla's father was killed. In the last episode, Arthur Harrow revealed that Marc played a part in the demise of his wife's father. This flashback sees him dead on the floor, which led to the revelation of how Marc became Khonshu's avatar, Moon Knight.

When piecing the puzzle together, it's discovered that Marc was discharged from the military and accepted work as a mercenary raiding an Egyptian tomb. His associate then changed the plan and eliminated everyone present in the archeological dig, including Layla's father.

Disgusted with what happened, Marc refused to take part in the slaughter and was mortally wounded by his associates. At this point, Khonshu offers to heal him in exchange for his service.

These hidden details and fun trivia are expected to carry on to Moon Knight's last episode next week. As it reaches its climax, viewers can look forward to more of these easter eggs soon.
