NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is working to finalize a contract extension that will keep him in the big office “through the end of the decade,” according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. There have been many new innovations during his tenure, with plenty more likely to come following this news.

Silver has served the role since 2014, with the league growing significantly under his watch. The NBA continues to garner praise for the prominent manner in which it markets its stars, as global demand for the sport increases. Owners are not going to seek change when revenue keeps pouring in.

Silver will surely take pride in the fact that this new deal comes the same year the NBA In-Season Tournament debuted. He pushed hard for the concept and saw his faith rewarded based on fan interest and player feedback. There were some hitches, but just like the Play-In Tournament, there is more reason to invest in regular season games.

Of course, Silver's tenure does not come without its share of controversy. The Association's business relationship with China is much-maligned by many people, especially under the current social climate. He is unlikely to waver on his stance going forward, ensuring that his detractors remain, and possibly multiply.

Silver has also drawn some criticism for the NBA's handling of domestic violence cases. He did, however, receive praise for banning former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the NBA for the racist remarks he made, as well as forcing Robert Sarver out of the Phoenix Suns on the basis of workplace misconduct.

This contract extension is crucial because it guarantees that Adam Silver is the one to lead the league past the LeBron James Era. There are scintillating talents abound ready to take on the mantle, but it will still be a massive transition for the NBA to navigate. Clearly, though, he has the Board of Governors' full trust.
