Michael Jordan is dipping into his pockets to invest in a sport not named basketball. In fact, Jordan is investing in something you might not know much about — esports. Jordan is investing around $26 million in aXiomatic, the company that owns the esports giant, Team Liquid.

“Now our group has both Jordan and Magic on the same team,” aXiomatic CEO Bruce Stein told Jacob Wolf of ESPN. “For the purposes of bringing on traditional sports strategy, competitive training and being able to take best-of-class learning from other sports, it was pretty exciting for us to bring both Magic and Michael together in this group.”

The growth of esports continues to surprise, and now it's clear that Michael Jordan believes in the future of esports. He's investing a sizable chunk of money into aXiomatic. Many NBA teams are investing in esports, with the NBA 2K League proving to be a prime example of the developing industry.

For many basketball fans, esports will never truly live up to watching the NBA or NFL. But there's no doubt that the younger generation is taking to esports and giving the industry a very bright future.

When you break things down in simple terms, there really are some basic similarities between traditional sports and esports. Fans are paying to see the best of the best compete against one another. Some want to see LeBron James driving the lane en route to a thunderous dunk. Others want to see Shadowburn get a triple kill with his dragonblade. To each his own.
