While the Golden State Warriors remain atop of the league standings with a 22-4 record, almost a third into the the regular season, shooting guard Klay Thompson is expecting the team to take yet another step forward.
The Warriors lead the league in scoring (117.8 points per game) and point differential (+11.7 points per game), but the spirit in the locker room is to push to make this team even better and more well-rounded.
“I still think we can reach another gear, to be honest,” Thompson told ESPN's Marc Stein in a TrueHoop Podcast, who's only a week removed from a 60-point outburst against the Indiana Pacers.
Golden State ranks 19th in points against, so they definitely can tighten some screws on the defensive end — but most importantly honing into not letting leads go.
As one of the most explosive teams in the NBA, the Warriors can carve up 15- and 20-point leads with relative ease, but are prone to letting teams back in the game unnecessarily. Perhaps the most crucial thing the 2015 championship team had in its favor, aside from health, was the fresh legs, which was all the fourth quarters in which Thompson and Stephen Curry sat on the bench with the second and third units taking care of things.
If the Warriors can reach that next gear, it can potentially turn them from championship contenders to championship favorites if they manage to click on all cylinders.
