Ever since the Warriors started off 24-0, all the talk has been about how they compare to the other great teams and who would win in a best-of-seven series. All year long we’ve seen the “But would they beat the 1995-96 Bulls?” comments all over social media. And, while this story has absolutely no chance of persuading anyone either way, it’s still fun to debate.
Our advanced statistics friends at FiveThirtyEight took a look at every basketball game in NBA history and compared the Warriors' entire 2015-16 season to every other franchises entire season since the NBA’s beginning. The results, while interesting, were less than surprising.

As you might expect, that great Bulls team still holds down the number one spot for now. And this chart doesn’t include Golden State's blowout loss on Sunday night.

However, if the Golden State can finish with another championship, they would then move into the top spot for the best season of all time. Interestingly, the Warriors and Bulls are the only two teams in the top 4. The Bulls at number three with their 1996-97 season and the Warriors for their championship run last year.
This season was especially top heavy for compared to other years. The San Antonio Spurs' season came in at number six all-time with the Thunder (38) and Cavs (72) not too far behind.
The rankings were based on what FiveThirtyEight calls an Elo rating. For more information on how that rating is calculated, check out FiveThirtyEight’s explanation of the here.
