If you were surprised by Kevin Durant's decision to join the Golden State Warriors, you weren't the only one.

Even the team's president and COO, Rick Welts, admitted to not believing it would happen until it did.

Welts on CBS Sports Radio’s Tiki and Tierney:

“Well, I think we had hope. We, like every other team, probably didn’t think it was going to happen, and I can assure you we had no indication it was going to happen until the phone rang at 7:30 in the morning in Bob Myers’ cabin on Lake Tahoe and Kevin called to give us his decision. I think there was a lot of screaming and yelling going on in the Myers’ cabin at that point in time.”

Durant said after his decision that he was still torn the night before, but when he woke up at 7 a.m., he knew he wanted to join the Warriors.

Many people believe that Durant may have been thinking about leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder for Golden State long before this but when you hear stuff like this, it seems like it may have really been up in the air until the morning of July 4.

Durant's two-year deal includes a player option at the end of next season, meaning his future with the Warriors isn't exactly certain just yet. Durant has said that he doesn't want to go through this kind of decision again, and most believe that means eventually signing with the Warriors long-term, but Welts had an interesting comment on the situation in this interview.

“There’s no commitment from Kevin. He signed a one-year contract with a player option. So I think the hope and expectation is there’s a business reason for doing that more than there is a basketball reason for doing that. We’ve got to be a place that is as good as he thought it was when he selected the Warriors over the other options that he had. I think we’re going through a really interesting time in our league. We’re all trying to figure out what the new world is going to look like.”

It's hard to imagine it not working out for Durant in Oakland. He'll have options either way.
