A postseason matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors is usually reserved for the conference semifinals, at the least. But, in a weird twist of fate, the 2018 NBA Playoffs will now feature these two teams going toe-to-toe in the first round.

There's a simple explanation behind this uncommon event, though, which can only be summed up in two words — Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs' superstar has been embroiled in a brouhaha for most of the season involving the real status of his health, bringing along an unfamiliar cloud of controversy to the storied organization.

Leonard played in only nine games for San Antonio in the regular season. That said, the Spurs' resolve is still admirable as they were able to survive a frantic Western Conference playoff race sans their best player. Meanwhile, the defending world champions will also enter the first round without its heart and soul in Stephen Curry due to an injury.

However, the Warriors are not the Spurs. They still have Kevin Durant, Draymond, Green, and Klay Thompson to lead their attack. In a recent statement via Mark Medina of The Mercury News, Green talked about how a possible Leonard comeback in Round 1 would affect the series.

Draymond Green said “it doesn't matter” if Kawhi Leonard returns. Green has respect for Kawhi but he says he still takes Spurs seriously regardless.

While others may view his comment as overly confident, Green isn't overboard here as he only maintains the utmost respect for the Warriors' opponents. Even if Leonard returns, his conditioning would still be a huge question mark. Although there's no denying how dangerous the Spurs can be with the two-time Defensive Player of the Year in tow.

Just last year, the Spurs were dominating the Warriors in Game 1 of their playoff matchup until Leonard aggravated his ankle injury, forcing him out of the entire series.
