From the humble beginnings of the Springhill Apartment Complex in Akron, Ohio, LeBron James has risen to become one of the world's most recognizable faces. Now in his 17th season of NBA service, the Lakers superstar serves as an inspiration to young athletes around the globe.

On Thursday, Nike released a new video ad that showcases The King's unlikely path to prominence. As part of the clip, which features children growing up in the inner-city, James spoke words of inspiration:

“We always hear about an athlete's humble beginnings,” James says in his new ad from Nike. “How they emerged from poverty or tragedy to beat the odds…

“They're supposed to be the stories of determination that capture the American Dream,” James adds. “They're supposed to be stories that let you know these people are special.

“But you know what would be really special?” James says in closing. “If there were no more humble beginnings.”

James hasn't forgot about his roots in Akron. The former No. 1 overall pick has given back to the community in many ways, including the opening of the I Promise School. He didn't stop there, though. James actually had an already existing apartment building renovated to serve as public housing for some of the school's students and their families:

“Initially, our work was focused on helping these kids earn an education,” The Lakers star said in a statement, via CNN. “But we've found that it is impossible to help them learn if they are struggling to survive — if they are hungry, if they have no heat in the freezing winter, if they live in fear for their safety. We want this place to be their home where they feel safe, supported, and loved, knowing we are right there with them every step of the way as they get back on their feet.”

James' story continues to serve as an inspiration to children who are facing adversity. Being successful in life requires a bit of help at times, and he's more than willing to offer a hand.
