Philadelphia-born point guard Kyle Lowry had the opportunity to join Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid on the Sixers this past offseason from the Toronto Raptors, but the reunion wasn't meant to be as he headed down to South Beach.
As the Ben Simmons saga developed over the past months, according to B/R sources, Sixers ownership believed that the most opportunistic time to strike a deal for Simmons came during the pre-draft process.
It became difficult and less than ideal for the Sixers when Russell Westbrook emerged as the only All-NBA guard on the trade block. Other rumored All-NBA guards such as Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal were no longer seeking trades away from their current teams.
Teams around the league were looking to upgrade, and talent on the market seemed very difficult to find — this somehow paved the way for the Sixers to seek the homecoming of Raptors point guard, Kyle Lowry.
Article Continues BelowB/R sources share that Lowry had a great interest in becoming the ball-handling link between Simmons and Embiid. However, Philadelphia could not acquire the six-time NBA All-star because the only way he could have joined the Sixers was by way of a sign and trade for Simmons — hence, canceling out Lowry's interest in returning home.
Despite Simmons returning to training in the very near future, the Sixers' front office remains engaged with several teams across the league. These teams are of the following: Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trailblazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, and Toronto Raptors — with a mystery 10th franchise in the mix as well.
Though it still seems quite unclear, both the Simmons camp and the Sixers community are hopeful that this never-ending dramatic saga comes to an end sooner rather than later.
