The NFL community continues to mourn the loss of Dwayne Haskins. The former Washington and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was killed when he was struck by a dump truck in Florida on Saturday morning. The 24-year-old was across the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when he was hit.

According to NBC Miami, a man claims that he saw Haskins just moments before the accident.

Chris Stanley told the news outlet that he was dropping his daughter off at the Fort Lauderdale Airport early Saturday morning.

On his way home, he noticed cars “moving a little bit to the left” as if to avoid something. “And then I noticed an individual there starting to make their way onto the road,” Stanley said, all quotes courtesy of NBC Miami:

“He was about halfway, to a quarter way in the right lane, already onto the highway and I was already concerned that somebody was going to strike him right there at that moment,” he said.

Out of concern for the man, who he believes to have been the NFL quarterback, Stanley said he called 911 at 6:31 a.m. Florida Highway Patrol officials claim that the crash was reported six minutes after.

It is unclear why Haskins was on the highway when he was hit. Stanley did not have an answer when NBC asked if there were any conclusions he could draw about what the man he saw was doing on I-595:

“That's why it's just very disturbing,” Stanley said. “I just didn't understand the situation.”

A very disturbing and sad situation, indeed.
