The NFL has followed the lead of the professional sports leagues that have put forth a message against racial injustice during their respective seasons. It seems they will be taking another page out of their book for games in the 2020 NFL season.
Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the end zones will feature messages for social justice as part of their efforts to keep the spotlight on the real issues at hand, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on a conference call this afternoon that the league will stencil “End racism” and “It takes all of us” in the end zones at each stadium this fall.
“The NFL stands with the black community, the players, clubs and fans confronting systemic racism. We will not relent in our work,” Goodell said.
Aside from putting an emphasis on player safety during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, players also called on the NFL to take on an increased role in the fight against systemic racism following the death of George Floyd. While fans are relishing in sports being back, leagues are taking steps to keep the focus on racial injustice.
The NBA assembled a list of approved social justice messages that players were allowed to wear on the back of their jerseys. It is safe to say that the NFL may have put their own spin on this idea in order to keep the movement going.
Although there is still plenty of work to be done, it is encouraging to see the NFL continue to take tremendous strides from where they were when Colin Kaepernick took a knee in 2016.
