The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt a heartbreaking loss by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday night, as the Patriots defeated the Chiefs by a score of 37-31 in overtime.

Kansas City actually held a 28-24 lead late in the fourth quarter, only to see Tom Brady march New England down the field for a touchdown to make it 31-28 with 39 seconds remaining. The Chiefs proceeded to tie it with a field goal to send the game into overtime, but the Patriots won the coin toss, and Brady once again shined, converting three third downs on a drive that ended in a Rex Burkhead score, sending the Pats to their third straight Super Bowl.

Afterward, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was despondent, as expected:

“This hurts. It's supposed to hurt,” said Mahomes, according to Adam Teicher of ESPN NFL Nation.

Mahomes also took to Twitter to thank the Kansas City fans for an amazing season:

The 23-year-old completed 16 of his 31 passes for 295 yards and three touchdown passes in the loss, making a couple of terrific throws on the Chiefs' final drive of regulation to set up Harrison Butker for the game-tying field goal.

However, Mahomes was inconsistent throughout the night, largely due to the fact that New England's defensive front applied a ton of pressure, sacking him four times and hurrying him a whole lot more than that. The result was a lot of missed throws.

On the year overall, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards, a league-leading 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 113.8.
