The Detroit Lions did give head coach Jim Caldwell a contract extension, but as details have started to emerged, it could be argued that the deal is rather weak. In fact, it doesn't provide much job security at all.

According to ESPN and its sources, the extension Jim Caldwell signed a few months ago only runs through the 2018 season, with a team-option for the 2019 campaign. Basically, Caldwell got inked for just one more season.

Caldwell is in his fourth season with the Lions. During this period of time, the veteran coach has a 33-27 record, including a 6-6 record in 2017 entering Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For what it is worth, and it should be plenty, he has taken the Lions to the playoffs in two of his three seasons in Detroit.

In terms relative to his entire head coaching career, Caldwell has a 59-49 career record between the Lions and Indianapolis Colts.

When news of the extension came out in September, the National Football League franchise said the contract had been signed months prior. At the time, the idea was that it would keep him from being a lame-duck head coach, and was a multiyear deal.

Nevertheless, between the end of this season and the next, it appears Detroit isn't as fully committed to the coach as most originally thought.
