The Detroit Lions made a move aimed at fortifying their defensive line on Monday, as the team announced their signing of defensive end Robert Ayers, according to Michael Rothstein of ESPN.

The transaction came in the midst of the Lions’ lack of activity on their pass rush during their first three preseason games. Over that stretch, Detroit was only able to come up with a total of one sack, and it came in Week 3 of the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Lions were not able to get to the opposing quarterback in any of first two games in the preseason against the Oakland Raiders and the New York Giants, respectively, which was a major reason why they lost both contests.

In Detroit. Ayers will join a defensive line that also features Ziggy Ansah, who desperately needs help up front. Ansah had 12.0 of the team’s total of 35.0 quarterback takedowns last season, which was only good for 20th in the league. Ayers will also work with defensive end Anthony Zettel, who had 6.5 sacks a year ago.

Robert Ayers last played for the Bucs, recording 2.0 sacks and 20 tackles in 12 games (10 starts) in 2017. He was released by Tampa Bay back in March to clear some cap space.

Through nine years in the NFL, Ayers, who also played for the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants, has compiled 34.5 sacks and 195 tackles in 120 games.
