The Detroit Lions are hedging toward another possible playoff appearance, but there remains much uncertainty regarding the long-term future of head coach Jim Caldwell.

According to Michael Rothstein of ESPN, Caldwell's contract is only guaranteed through the 2018 season.

The source said Caldwell's extension is guaranteed for only 2018 with team options beyond that, so if the Lions decide to fire Caldwell, they would have to pay him for next season only.

Caldwell is in his fourth year with the Lions and currently holds a 7-6 record heading into Week 15. He has helped lead the team to two playoff appearances in two of his first three years with the team but fell in the Wild Card round in each trip.

The Lions had inked Caldwell to a multi-year extension back in September, which was believed to have provided him long-term stability despite the details of the deals not being publicly announced. This could potentially allow for Detroit to cut ties with him without much of a financial commitment to hinder the decision-making process.

Much of this could be determined by how the team finishes out the regular season with three games remaining that will be against the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers.
