The Green Bay Packers are set to host the NFC Divisional Round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. It's a rivalry that goes back a long time.

NBC Sports' David Michael Smith detailed Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' acknowledgement of the rivalry. He referenced the moment from the 1998 NFC Wild Card game when Steve Young found Terrell Owens for the game-winning 25-yard touchdown in the final seconds. He reminded everyone of the supposed fumble earlier on that drive that was not called. But he went on to say “I understand the history of this rivalry, the history of us against them. But these are two different teams.”

Rodgers was asked whether the history between the two teams adds fuel to the fire and motivation. Rodgers vehemently disagrees with that notion.

“Motivation comes from within. I already have enough motivation. Inspiration? I did watch this rivalry growing up.”

Rodgers has experienced part of this history already, losing the NFC Championship Game 37-20 ending their 2019-2020 season.

In that game, Rodgers watched as 49ers running back Raheem Mostert ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns. San Francisco built a 34-7 lead. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo only attempted eight passes that game, as they ran roughshod over the Packers defense.

On paper, Rodgers had a decent game, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. But he turned the ball over twice, helping lead to the massive deficit. It would be the first of two straight NFC Championship game losses. They lost to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

Rodgers and the Packers will look for some revenge Saturday at Lambeau Field.
