With right tackle Bryan Bulaga not practicing on Wednesday (right knee), the Green Bay Packers needed help at the position if he can't play on Sunday against the New York Giants. It appears as if they got that.

According to the NFL's official transaction wire, via ESPN, the team was awarded offensive tackle Jared Veldheer off of waivers on Wednesday.  The New England Patriots previously waived him.

Veldheer, 32, signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Patriots in the offseason. However, he never played in Foxborough. Shortly after signing the deal, the veteran tackle declared his retirement. The Patriots, months later, released him off of the reserve/retired list.

The addition of Veldheer should come as no surprise. After Bulaga suffered the injury in a Week 12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Matt LaFleur proclaimed the team would do anything to ensure the best results out of the right side of the line.

“We'll look at everything,” LaFleur said on Sunday, via ESPN. “Our goal is just to put our best five out there and we'll go from there. And we'll take the week to figure that out.”

Veldheer still has to pass a physical. If he does so, the Packers will need to clear a spot on their 53-man roster, likely via a release or the placement of another player on injured reserve.

Before signing with the Patriots in the offseason, Veldheer played one season as the Denver Broncos' starting right tackle. He played four seasons with both the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals before then.
